Mine Reddit and forum threads for customer pain points
Last updated
The problem
Customers describe their real frustrations, DIY workarounds, and reasons for switching tools in Reddit threads, niche forums, and public review sites, not in polished survey responses. Reading hundreds of long comment threads by hand takes days, and a quick keyword search only surfaces the top few posts.
How the agent works
You give the agent a product category or job-to-be-done, a list of relevant subreddits and public forums, and the questions you want answered (such as what people complain about, what spreadsheet or script they hacked together, and what makes them cancel a tool). The agent fetches matching threads and comments, filters out promotional posts and bots, clusters repeated complaints into themes, and writes a research brief where every claim is backed by verbatim quotes and direct links to the original threads.
Setup steps
- List 5 to 10 subreddits, public forums, or review pages where your target buyers talk about their workflow
- Define the search queries and intent patterns to look for: 'how do you handle', 'frustrated with', 'alternative to', 'switching from', 'built a script to'
- Have the agent pull recent threads and top comments, and strip out obvious self-promotion or affiliate spam
- Ask it to group recurring pain points into themes, count how many distinct threads mention each one, and note the tools named
- Require 2 to 3 verbatim quotes with direct thread URLs under every theme so you can verify context
- Open the linked threads yourself to confirm the nuance before using the findings in product roadmap decisions or ad copy

Not ranked. Tools marked Featured pay for a highlighted listing; that never decides which tools we include. Check each vendor's current features and pricing.

Human in the loop
A product manager, founder, or marketer reads the linked source threads to verify that quotes are real and representative before acting on them. The agent only researches; it never posts replies or promotional comments in those communities.
Risks and guardrails
LLMs can paraphrase a single loud commenter as a widespread trend or invent quotes if not grounded in retrieved text, so require thread URLs and exact quotes for every point. Respect platform API rules and rate limits, and never turn a research agent into an automated reply bot that spams communities.
ROI notes
Compare the hours spent compiling a customer-pain report by hand with reviewing a sourced brief, and track how many product ideas, positioning angles, or SEO topics come out of the verified threads.
Also useful: turn your own support tickets into a voice-of-customer report; monitor X for trending topics in your niche; produce a sourced market research report.
